President

Bryce Wilson

Major/ Program: CSET Software Engineering

I’m an Embedded Systems Engineering student. I’m originally from a small agricultural town in California. After moving to the Oregon Coast during high school, I found an intense passion for computer science and robotics. By dual enrolling in my community college, SWOCC, I was only able to go so far with the limited curriculum. In an attempt to cultivate and grow my passion further, I decided that OIT would be the best fit for me. Before becoming the ASOIT Vice President, I previously had been a peer tutor for OIT and had occasionally helped Student Involvement & Belonging with events and promotions. Further before that, I was a part of the National Honors Society where I had engaged in lots of leadership roles. Now I’m excited and ready to use my professional skills to help OIT.

Ted Mastrangelo

Major/ Program: CSET Software

I grew up in Portland, Oregon. My interest in programming began during a brief foray into game development. After earning an Associate of Science degree from Portland Community College, I transferred to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ to pursue a bachelor’s in software engineering technology. My time at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ has been enhanced by various campus roles, allowing me to connect with the student community. Before becoming the Admin Officer of ASOIT, I spent a year working at the campus information center, where I gained valuable experience in supporting fellow students. In addition to my ASOIT responsibilities, you may also find me working as a cashier in student services, providing assistance to students. These experiences have fostered my commitment to leadership and campus involvement, while also helping me grow both personally and professionally.

Historical ASOIT-PM Actions

During the month of February 2023, the Associated Students of ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ - Portland Metro (ASOIT-PM) conducted a survey consisting of

  • 7 questions about course modality/scheduling/resource preferences and effectiveness
  • 6 demographic questions
  • 1 open ended feedback question
  • 1 question on age added post survey

There are 554 students in the active student list for the Portland-Metro (PM) campus. There were 176 responses initially and after removing duplicates, Klamath Falls students, and unfinished responses there were 123 responses resulting in a 22% response rate. The executive summary begins with the key findings followed by a detailed report on the results of the survey including distribution, methodology, and analysis. The appendix contains the full results along with results broken down by populations. To make a request for different population groupings than the ones found in the appendix, please email PM-ASOIT@groups.oit.edu.

ASOIT PM led an open event to provide all parties responsible for addressing student barriers at the Portland-Metro campus with the opportunity to share their voice and take ownership in addressing said barriers. They provided dinner to focus groups comprised of students, staff, and faculty. The groups were instructed to identify and come to a consensus on at least one issue from the summaries of the initiatives that they led throughout the year and then propose a measurable and actionable solution. The most important part of the event was the consensus on the identification of the biggest barriers at the Portland-Metro campus.

ASOIT PM hosted and moderated an open forum with panelists from academic leadership to discuss current barriers to academic success. They provided this after the event.

  1. The attached letter was sent to University Leadership to ensure the discussions held are heard loud and clear. For those who couldn't attend, I would like to summarize what was discussed to include you in the conversation.
  2. Several faculty are rarely seen on campus. We expect professionalism and commitment to providing an exceptional learning environment.
  3. Department Chairs will make the visit to the Portland-Metro campus at least once per term and advertise their visit in advance. Many students’ academic issues that cannot be resolved with the instructor are the responsibility of the Department Chair, and this will be Academic leadership’s opportunity to address academic concerns.
  4. Courses advertised as in-person are expected to be held in-person. Students making the trip to campus for an in-person course that is being held through Zoom without notice is not acceptable.
  5. Faculty advisors are expected to provide career advice and be trained on how to provide advising in career preparation. Your studies here are meant to prepare you to launch into a career!
  6. Two-year course maps should be easily accessible for all degree programs so that students can plan their courses.
  7. The reporting structure for students with academic concerns is (1) Instructor, (2) Department Chair, (3) Deans, and (4) Provost.
  8. The course search function of the OIT website is meant to include material and software costs so that students know what is required before signing up for courses.
  9. Additional support and accessibility from faculty in 300-400 level courses is needed. Tutoring from qualified peers in these courses is a challenge across almost all universities.
  10. Recorded lectures should more frequently be made available to students as additional study materials for courses.

Quality of Education ~ Academic Advising ~ Improving Amenities for Students

Quality of Education
  • Promote consistency in curriculum content across courses and course series.
  • Enhance adjunct faculty training to support high teaching standards.
  • Reconsider the necessity of Saturday and evening classes given the shifting student demographics.
  • Examine the impact of adjunct faculty schedules on course availability, advocating for more full-time professors at the PM campus, with data comparing faculty numbers by department from previous years.
  • Ensure students have access to up-to-date lab equipment to support practical, hands-on learning experiences.
Academic Advising
  • Advocate for dedicated academic advisors to provide consistent student support, including a specific advisor for veterans to address their unique needs.
  • Address accessibility concerns when advisors are out of the country, ensuring students always have advising options.
  • Simplify course registration by removing PIN requirements for non-freshmen.
  • Ensure faculty advisors are well-versed in degree requirements if continuing in an educational advisory role and enhance career advising to align with student needs.
  • Explore a pilot advising program at the PM campus to explore new strategies and streamline appointment scheduling.
Improving Amenities for Students
  • Introduce kitchen appliances in common areas to improve convenience for students.
  • Explore partnerships with local fitness centers like Edge Family Fitness to expand recreation opportunities for students.
  • Upgrade student spaces, focusing on furniture improvements in places like The Roost to create more comfortable and inviting environments.

To the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ students at the Portland-Metro campus,

PM-ASOIT would like to make the student body aware of an open letter sent to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ administration. This letter was not intended to be political but intended to preserve the financial health and security of ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ students and the university at large.

PM-ASOIT asked ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ administration to address four points:

  • Financial planning resources
  • Institutional support
  • Communication updates
  • Proactive advocacy and resolutions

We felt the open letter would be the best way to express to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ leadership that we desire support for all students as federal policies change. The full text of the letter can be found here.

If you should have any questions, please email us at PM-ASOIT@groups.oit.edu or stop by The Roost (4th Floor) during .

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

PORTLAND-METRO: ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ's Portland-Metro campus resides on the ancestral and contemporary home of the Clackamas, Kathlamet, Multnomah, the Tualatin Kalapuya People, Tumwater, and the Watlala bands of the Chinook, who have stewarded this land since time immemorial.
We also respectfully acknowledge the many tribes and bands of the Klamath Basin region, the many Indigenous nations and lands along the Columbia, and the continued sovereignty of the nine tribes of Oregon and Northern Californian tribes that have ties to this land. It is important to acknowledge the ancestors of this place and to recognize that we are all here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. We also respectfully acknowledge the many Indigenous nations, bands, and tribes lands along the Columbia River. In doing so, we hope to honor their legacy and lives, as well as continue to build the relationship with the Native peoples of this region, the state of Oregon, and across the United States.
