Marriage and Family Therapy
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are mental health providers that approach assessment, diagnosis, and treatment from a relational and systemic perspective. MFTs believe that mental health problems are formed and/or exacerbated in relationships and they must be healed in relationships. Graduate training provides MFT students with specialized training to treat a wide variety of presenting problems in individuals, couples, families, and group systems. The primary difference between MFTs and other mental health providers is the systemic and relational emphasis in the therapeutic process.
MFTs work in a wide variety of settings, including:
- Child and Family Service Agencies
- Employee Assistance Programs
- Medical Centers and Hospitals
- Substance Use and Addiction Treatment Programs
- Veterans Services Facilities
- Churches and Religious Settings
- Schools
- Prisons
- Private and Group Practice
MFT Program Overview
The MFT Program at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ is a full-time mental health graduate program with specialized training in systems, families, and relationships. Students are admitted to the program to begin coursework each fall. The MFT Program takes 2.75 years to successfully complete; part-time opportunities are available upon request. A year-long practicum experience begins in June between year two and three of the program. Courses are offered nights, weekends, and days in a variety of modalities, including: face-to-face in person; face-to-face via video conferencing; blended; and fully online.

Advanced Specialty Training
The ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ MFT Program provides advanced training in:
Integrated Behavioral Healthcare & Medical Family Therapy
¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ MFT students develop the knowledge and skills required to collaborate as Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Providers and Medical Family Therapists (MedFTs) on interdisciplinary healthcare teams; provide medical mental health consultations in collaborative care settings; provide individual, couple, family, and group therapy in healthcare settings; and collaborate with colleagues in building healthy communities.
Substance Misuse, Addiction, and Recovery
¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ MFT students are well prepared to work with individuals, couples and families struggling with substance abuse and addiction. From a trauma-informed perspective, students learn the advanced knowledge and skills required to work well with substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders; and the impact of the same on couples and families.
Rural Mental Healthcare Emphasis
Mental healthcare needs in rural areas, like southern Oregon, provide unique challenges that require unique approaches. Emphasized throughout the entire program, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ MFT prepares students to excel as rural mental healthcare professionals.

Kevin Garrett gladly joins the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ faculty as Clinical Director of the M.S. Marriage and Family Therapy master’s degree program. Prior to teaching at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, Kevin taught for three years in southwestern Oklahoma at Cameron University in the Department of Psychology. He served as one of the clinical faculty in the Psychology Department and as a Practicum Supervisor while at Cameron University. He worked full-time in community mental health as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Wyoming for five years before teaching at Cameron University. Kevin completed his Ph.D. in the Marriage and Family Therapy specialization at Kansas State University in 2014, earned his master’s degree in the Marriage and Family Therapy specialization at the University of Oregon in 2006, and received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Utah State University in 2003. He completed a Medical Family Therapy-focused doctoral internship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska in 2009, and earned a post-degree certificate in Medical Family Therapy while completing his doctoral internship. Kevin holds the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Approved Supervisor designation. He looks forward to giving presentations in the community, region, state, as well as nationally. He is excited to be returning to his home state of Oregon, and to bring his clinical experience, passion for teaching, and community-focused orientation to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ!
